Groundwater Resources Workshop for Makueni County: Directorate of Water Staff and Staff of Jkuat, The Technical University of Kenya (Tu-K) and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (Jooust)
The workshop titled Groundwater Resources Workshop for Makueni County Directorate of Water Staff was held at Kusyombunguo Hotel in Wote Town, Makueni County on 26/8/2016. It was attended by twenty (20) key players in the water resources sector. The resource persons included Stanley Kibe Ng’ang’a (Ph. D student in Civil Engineering, TU-K), Prof. G. Thumbi and Dr. Okwadha both of TU-K, Prof. Nyadawa of JOOUST, Dr. Mbindyo and Engineer P. Kibetu both of JKUAT. Mr. Benedict Ngula, a Research Assistant also participated. Water resources issues in terms of availability, quality and groundwater exploration using GIS techniques are some of the topics that were discussed. The recently developed groundwater potential map for Makueni County was also discussed. This map is a tool that enhances the accuracy in positioning of boreholes because it shows the likely yields of such boreholes thereby reducing chances of borehole failure.
Other resource persons from the County including Deputy Governor and Director of Water, Makueni County, were also present during the workshop whereby the County Government indicated its willingness to partner with Universities in research that seeks to solve the challenges facing the people of Makueni. This workshop was jointly funded by both JKUAT and Makueni County Government and supported by Stanley Kibe (PhD student in Civil Engineering, TU-K) and staff of the three state universities. Stanley Kibe has been involved in ground water mapping in Makueni County as part of the research towards his doctoral thesis.
