Prof. George Amolo

Prof. George Amolo is a professor of Physics with focus on hard materials and materials for energy conversion. In last decade, the use of computational modeling to support experimental research employing density functional theory and machine learning approaches have formed a major direction in his research work. He has previously served as the Chair of the Department of Physics and Space Sciences, and later as the Director of the School of Physics and Earth Sciences at the Technical University of Kenya. He undertook a PhD at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Prof. Amolo has supervised 11 Phd and 24 MSc theses to completion as well as assessed, as an external examiner, 22 and 23, MSc and PhD theses, respectively. He has served as a Physics subject external examiner for undergraduate and postdoctoral levels at University of Nairobi, Egerton University and Alupe University. He has authored/co-authored over 60 research papers and is a peer reviewer in several international journals in the areas of Solid State Physics, Electronic Materials, Applied Surface Science, Applied Physics, Computational Science, among others. Over the years, he has served as a Postgraduate Studies Coordinator and Chair of the Faculty of Science Research Committee in Chepkoilel University College, Moi University (and later University of Eldoret), Chair of the Materials Research Society of Kenya (2018-2024), Kenya Education Network (KENET) Research Associate in Computational Modeling and Materials Science from 2018 to date, Regular Associate of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP, Trieste, Italy, 2009-2014), Principal Investigator (MATS862) at the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC, Cape Town, South Africa, 2016-date), Visiting Associate Professor of the School of Physics, the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa (2016- 2018), the African continent nominee on the committee reviewing 100 years of progress of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), member of the International Advisory Panel of the African School on Electronic Structure Methods and Applications (ASESMA, 2010-date), reviewer for postgraduate and researcher scholarship/grant applications for then National Council for Science and Technology (NCST), National Commission for Science and Technology (NACOSTI), National Research Foundation (NRF- Kenya) and National Research Foundation (NRF-South Africa). He is passionate about mentorship to prepare the next generation of scientists and was the Co-ordinator of the Scientific Mentorship Programme (SMP) funded by then Emerging Nations Science Foundation (ENSF) at University of Eldoret in 2013-2016, which supported 12 students and 1 postdoctoral fellow. Outside research and scientific mentorship for graduate students and early career Phds, he has served the Anglican Church of Kenya for more than 40 years, as an adult, in choral music for worship at St. Lukes Church, Kenyatta/Ngummo, Nairobi, St. Mathews Cathedral, Eldoret, and currently at the All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi.
